During Banned Books Week 2023, the Golden State Readers organized the #BreaktheTape campaign to spread awareness to students in California and across the country about the book ban crisis sweeping the United States. That year, the Golden State Readers were able to wrap 400 California student’s backpacks in caution tape to spread awareness for their cause.
In 2024, the Golden State Readers relaunched their campaign and partnered with several organizations such as PEN America, Brooklyn Public Library, The Mix at San Fransisco Public Library, National Coalition Against Censorship, The Beatrice Martin Foundation, Nixa SABR and others. With the help of their partners, they mobilized Caution Tape Ambassadors from 25 schools — 10 California high schools and 15 campuses from seven other states. In 2024, the Golden State Readers and its ambassadors wrapped 1,400+ backpacks across the United States

Are you ready to bring #BreaktheTape to YOUR school or community? Become a #BreaktheTape Ambassador to work with the Golden State Readers to be part of our Campaign this Banned Books Week. Ambassadors are required to join one training call (with optional follow-ups) where we will work together to coordinate events and fundraisers for Banned Books Week and discuss strategies to mobilize their communities.
