Freedom To Read Student Summit – West Hollywood Library

The Golden State Readers held a student summit at the West Hollywood Library on September 28. The Summit featured a series of youth activism workshops where student attendees learned the latest nationwide book ban data collected by PEN America, assesses emerging censorship trends, and discussed ways to effectively advocate for free expression and access to diverse literature in our communities.

Freedom to Read Community Summit

UC Irvine
The Golden State Readers partnered with PEN America, Diversify Our Narrative, and the Public Defenders Hub for a day of advocacy, discussion, and action. Attendees engaged in discussions on the impacts of the censorship, intolerance and exclusion, participated in a series of workshops with community leaders with first hand experience combatting censorship through activism, and heard from guest speakers authors Celeste Pewter and Julia Walton.

The Golden State Readers held an open mic poetry event, bringing community members of all ages together for poetry, snacks and live music. All proceeds from food and a raffle benefitted the 1000s Books Fund.
